Responding to the changing needs of Issaquah School District, Cornerstone designed the conversion of a middle school into three separate schools: Clark Elementary (K-6), Gibson EK (9-12) and the Academy for Community Transition (ACT). This GC/CM project was designed and constructed in two phases, allowing for completion on a tight schedule and budget.
Issaquah School District developed a program for a high school with an alternate educational delivery system that is project based rather than subject based. To accomplish this goal the program was to convert an existing 2-story classroom wing of the old middle school and enclose the covered walkways into a multi-use Commons which included an existing elevator and stairs that were reconditioned for reuse.
Designs for converting Gibson EK for the renovation and addition provided flexible and diverse learning spaces. The Commons includes a theatrical stage, lounge area, individual cooking and an informal library that opens directly to the exterior to expand the learning environment. The space was designed as a backdrop for students’ artistic interaction and creativity. Gibson EK also includes the Academy for Community Transition (ACT), a program that assists students with developmental disabilities move toward independent lifestyles.
