Port Townsend Post Office

Initially built to signify the unshakable presence of the federal government in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, this sandstone clad building has become a central landmark to the City of Port Townsend.

After multiple building science investigations by the Cornerstone team, and working with the United States Post Office as well as with the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation a scope of work and construction documents were developed to restore the sandstone façade and original windows to provide protection to the building adorn the next 30 years.

Our team at Cornerstone researched methodologies and developed logistics with the team from Hilger Construction Inc.  and the Post Master to execute the rehabilitation over a 12 month period.

The work included restoring of the sandstone cladding to create a sound surface and treatment that would consolidate the material to withstand driving rain and atmospheric contaminants. The windows were restored to original condition and operation by removal to a workshop in Tacoma for meticulous rebuilding.

Our team is grateful for the partnerships that were brought to effect this restoration project.
