Sunny Hills Elementary School

Client:  Issaquah School District

Size: 72,000 sf

Construction Value: $28 million

Completed: 2016

CAG worked closely with the district and local zoning and building departments to provide student and public safety throughout construction, while protecting tree areas and wetlands on this occupied site throughout this two-phased project to replace Sunny Hills Elementary.

During Phase I, a new two-story school was constructed on the existing play field and adjacent property, along with temporary bus loop and outdoor play area. Phase 2 included demolition of the old school and site development including: play areas, rain gardens, new bus loop and a wetland buffer. On site-portables were remodeled and maintained for future growth.

The steep site afforded main entrance on the second floor, providing main corridor overlook to a naturally lit two-story library and exposed building structure. Easy wayfinding with a central stair allows for smooth flow throughout the school. The play area directly accesses bus drop and commons/gym, where program activities can be subdivided by the use of movable partitions.
