For more than 50 years, the East Plaza has anchored the Washington State Capitol Campus, a landmark public space perched atop the East Plaza parking garage. The waterproofing system protecting the structure below has reached the end of its service life, allowing water infiltration into the garage, so the plaza must be restored before further damage occurs. The Washington State Department of Enterprise Services selected Cornerstone Architectural Group to evaluate the plaza’s future, weighing architectural significance, structural realities, preservation goals, and long-term maintenance needs to identify a path forward that balances historic stewardship with the practical demands of rehabilitating the garage below. Through thoughtful analysis and practical design solutions, Cornerstone is helping shape the future of this important civic landmark, ensuring the East Plaza can continue serving Washington’s Capitol Campus for decades to come.
